Zoey

In Memory of Zoey
Case number #3716
20 May 2001 to 15 October 2004

Boxer Rescue had given Zoey her name and it fit her to a “T”, so I just kept it. She was so much like her name – free, independent and so full of life, and yet she still required some one to love her. I had first seen Zoey while I was a volunteer dog walker. I walked Zoey and spent some time with her on a beautiful Saturday in May 2001. I fell in love with Zoey on that day. On that same Saturday, my brother had also found his best friend at Boxer Rescue, and his name is Rocko. While my brother took Rocko home that day, I had to sleep on it about Zoey. You see, with Zoey, she would bring the total number of boxers living at my house to four. Well, needless to say, Zoey won, (as did I). The next day my sister and I returned to Boxer Rescue and I adopted Zoey, while my sister adopted a male boxer that’s named Rebel.

Zoey was used as a breeder in her former life and it showed on her. She had so many motherly instincts towards the other three dogs, that it was amazing. She also turned out to be an alpha female and that made for some very interesting times. Zoey had some funny quirks too. For instance Zoey would typically take a TD from one of the dishes, after the morning meal and go into my bedroom, jump up on my bed and eat the TD while looking out my window. (A TD is a dry hard food supplement to help keep their teeth clean – she loved them.) Or if she wasn’t hungry for her TD at that moment, she would hide it out in the backyard in one of her special secret places. There was one time when my other girl, McKayLa had found one of Zoey’s hidden TD’s out in the grass. Well, McKayLa just ate it and when Zoey saw her, Zoey chased her away from her hiding spot, so she could check out her hiding spot for her TD. Then when she found that it was gone, she chased after McKayLa. Or there was the time when I took all four of my kids over to my parents’ house. I can’t remember why Rocko was tied up, but Zoey took advantage of it. She snagged Rocko’s rope and led him around as if he were her “boy-toy”. It was so funny that we had to take pictures of it. Well – that was my Zoey. She did those and many other amazing things that I’d never seen other dogs do before. She was truly an amazing, sweet, loving and beautiful girl – she was one of a kind.

Then tragedy came along in October. My brother and I had gone to our annual softball tournament in early October. I had taken McKayLa along with us, as she is the mellowest of the four kids. While I was gone, both of my sisters took turns watching after my other three kids. Upon my return home, I noticed that Zoey wasn’t looking too good, so the next morning I took her to the veterinary hospital. The doctor told me that Zoey had an infection; along with her running a high temperature and that she was de-hydrated. The doctor wanted to keep her for a few days so that they could aggressively treat her, and I agreed, as it was the best course of treatment for Zoey. Later that day, Zoey’s temperature had dropped a bit and she was even perkier. Then that night Zoey passed over the rainbow, peacefully in her sleep. The doctor said that she most likely died from heart failure. Zoey was no older than 8 years, but even still she was too young to pass over the rainbow.

Zoey, I already miss your morning wake-ups for me of thumping your front paws on my head. I’ll miss you barking out my bedroom window, shaking your whole body and the bed with each bark. I’ll miss you riding along with me in my truck, sitting next to me looking out the window and moving with each turn of the truck. I’ll miss watching you play with your stuffed toys. Oh what a joy it was to watch you, as it must have been for you to be able to play. I’ll miss watching you play roughhouse with Rocko, as only you two could play. I’ll miss seeing you when I get home from work. Just sitting there, pretty as a little girl that you were, with that innocent grin on your face, seemingly saying “I didn’t do it – honest”. I’ll miss petting your beautiful soft coat, the softest coat that I’d ever seen or felt. I’ll miss seeing you jump into your pool to cool off. I’ll miss seeing you waiting patiently for your nightly snack, drooling with anticipation. I’ll miss your timely wake up calls at night, after I’d fallen asleep in my chair watching TV. Like clockwork at 11 or 11:30, you’d come wake me up and tell me it was time for bed. All of these things I know that I’ll miss and many, many, many more.

The honest to god truth be told, I am and will so forever be grateful that Zoey actually adopted ME on that Sunday, back in May of 2001. With what little time that she spent with us, I know that she was the happiest little girl on earth. Thank you Ursula and Boxer Rescue so very much for my Zoey, she was one of a kind, which I’ll never forget and I’ll forever miss.

Until we meet again…
Your Sister McKayLa, Brothers Taz & Rocko and your daddy, David – Good-bye Zoey, WE LOVE YOU.
