TRIBUTES: Blossom

Blossom - 12/02/2006

We lost part of our family this week.  We adopted Blossom from Boxer Rescue 10 years ago, when my son was 4 and my daughter was 6.  Phillip, my son, says his first memory of Blossom is that she came up to him and licked his face in the park.  She loved our kids like a mother, and has been part of their lives as they grew up.  Michaela, my daughter, says her favorite memory of Blossom is her going trick-or-treating around the neighborhood with us.  Paula, my wife, says she remembers how Blossom would wake the kids up in the morning to get ready for school.  She also loved her “private time” with Blossom during the day when it was just the two of them at home.

Blossom’s favorite thing was to be around her family.  She loved having her ears scratched, and if you scratched them just right, she’d kick her hind leg.  She had a regal bearing, but could also be a clown.  She was loyal and protective, but also very gentle with the kids when they were younger.

She had slowed down in the last few years.  She couldn’t jump as high or run as fast as she once did, but she was still enjoying life and active.  Last Saturday, December 2, 2006, as she was coming in from the backyard, she just fell over and died.  We tried CPR on her, but she was gone almost instantly.  Phillip, now 14, is a linebacker on his high school football team.  2 years ago he broke his arm in a game and the coaches were amazed that he never cried.  He cried when Blossom died.  We all cried.  She was the perfect dog, the perfect boxer, and will definitely be missed.

We took her remains to the vet to be cremated, and she will sit on a shelf above her pillow in the family room so she can always be with her family.
