Dear BRLA:
Remember me? Last August I came to adopt. I was pretty flexible
on size, color, and gender, but I insisted that I had to have
a young one. The younger the better. Well, your volunteers
talked with me and decided that a young one wouldn't fit with
my lifestyle. I really didn't have the time to do the training.
Instead, they brought out an adult bonded pair. The male was
a little gray around the muzzle and the female had poor eyesight,
but they were otherwise healthy. They were very sweet, but
I just wasn't sure. What if I got attached to them and they
died in a couple of years? I thought it over and decided to
adopt the pair and enjoy them for however long they live.
I'm so happy I did! They were already trained and had no difficulty
adjusting to my lifestyle. I've only made one compromise.
I changed my "no getting on the furniture" rule.
The male, Bob (I decided not to change his name), gets so
pouty if I don't sit in his lap while he watches TV!
I would just like to tell anyone
out there considering adoption, don't overlook the older ones.
When I went to Boxer Rescue, I was certain that I wouldn't
consider anyone over the age of 25. Now I'm glad that I went
for "experience." Remember, humans take a LONG time
to mature. Do you really want to spend your whole life training
them?
Best regards,
Heidi
