We
adopted Alaska at the end of January 2005. We had never owned
a boxer before, but my husband and I were up for the task.
When we came to visit the Boxer Rescue we were looking more
for a female. When we got out of the truck and seen Alaska
sitting in the crate, we both knew he was the one for us!
We did, however, look at a few other boxers, but we kept going
back to Alaska. He was very sad and depressed despite of his
good treatment by the volunteers. My husband and I both wanted
to take him home and make him the newest member of the Taylor
family.
After
we left with our baby boy, we went to All Pet Headquarters
to get all the supplies we needed to give Alaska a proper
welcome. I think everyone in the store came up to us and asked
us about him or just wanted to pet him. After that he was
able to go and check out his new home. We are in the military
and we were going to be moving in May 2005, so we were living
with some friends that helped us welcome Alaska to his new
home
Over
the next few weeks Alaska adjusted to us and we adjusted to
him. Before long we could not imagine our lives Pre-Alaska.
It was a match made in heaven. Alaska came out of his shell
over the next few months, or so we thought (we found out about
the true Alaska after our move). He was still very nervous
around new people and would stay right next to us till he
felt secure enough to go to them.
So
at the end of May we had to make our move from California
to Missouri. While packing Alaska got really scared, we knew
he thought he was going to be left behind. It was sad to see
this dog that was sad when we got him and then became such
a happy, playful dog, go back to being sad and scared again.
We tried to be reassuring, but you could tell he was still
scared.
He
did so well with our three-day trip. After we made it to Missouri
he was able to see his new home. We had purchased our fist
home and it was time for the three of us to get settled in.
The first thing we did was build a six foot privacy fence
this way Alaska could run and play off of his leash. While
we did that Alaska was mastering the skill of going up and
down the stairs. That was so much fun to watch. Also, over
the next few weeks Alaska met both sets of grandparents, cousins,
aunts, and uncles. He gets along with all of them really well.
He also had to get use to his new sister (a miniature poodle
that I have had for nine years) that was staying with my parents.
From the start Alaska thought he found a playmate, but Febe
would rather be left alone. They do play together now, or
rather Alaska runs circles around Febe. They are very entertaining
together. Soon they will have to a new sister to look after
because we are having a baby at the end of February.
Now
Alaska spends his days lying on the couch staring out the
picture window in the living room, sun bathing on the deck,
running his obstacle course in the back yard, or trying to
get Febe to play with him. He also has his course inside in
case of a rainy day; he likes to always be prepared. He loves
any toys he gets and has fun playing ball with us.
We
just wanted to take the time to say thank you for allowing
us to find the perfect four-legged member of the Taylor family.
You guys do a great job and if we decide to add to our family
again we will come to you guys to find the perfect family
member. Thank you for adding so much to our family.
